Salt & Pepper Camping

:on

Pepper had been looking forward to camping for months. He had planned every last detail. He made lists of all the equipment needed; everything from long metal sticks for roasting marshmallows to a small headband light, so one could walk hands free, even at night.

Now Salt on the other hand was more of a fly by the seat of your pants kind of fellow or basically a last minute planner. He had come to the river with few if any supplies.

“Isn’t this the life, relaxing by the river with a nice cool drink?” Pepper asked. “Yes, you do look very relaxed in that comfortable chair,” responded Salt, as he tried to adjust his tail on the hard rock he was seated on.“Where is your chair?” asked Pepper.“I forgot to bring it,” replied Salt.“Did you bring something to drink?”“No, I forgot that too,” added Salt.Pepper just stared at Salt in disbelief.“And I also forgot to bring my sleeping bag, tent, food, water…”Pepper interrupted, “Did you remember to bring anything?”

“Well yes, I brought my swim trunks,” answered Salt reluctantly.“So you intended to borrow everything else from me?” Pepper asked, now thoroughly annoyed.“I didn’t think that you would mind,” Salt added shyly.“Well that is just grand! What do I look like, the supply store?!!”Pepper was truly upset. He didn’t like it when Salt waited until the last minute to do things and then was unprepared.

“I guess I will go for a walk then,” said Salt sadly.“Maybe you should,” replied Pepper with disdain.Salt walked away and glanced back at Pepper several times, but Pepper only looked away.

Pepper sat on his comfortable chair with a cool drink in hand, but he was not happy. He could not stop thinking about his argument with Salt. Why was Salt not prepared, he kept asking himself. Salt had known about the trip for months. How could he be so irresponsible?Pepper continued this argument in his head for the next several hours and he didn’t even notice that the sun had gone down. Suddenly he began to feel a bit lonely and even a little scared.

A strange chirping sound came from the wooded area.“What was that?!!”Pepper said out loud. Then another strange sound came from the other direction. “Yikes!!!” screamed Pepper, as he ran toward his tent.

He tripped over a small rock that he hadn’t noticed, because he wasn’t wearing his small headband light.“Owwww!” he yelled out in pain, as he crawled into his tent.

He quickly zipped up the tent door and slipped into his sleeping bag. Now he wished that he had never argued with Salt.“I wish Salt was here,” Pepper whimpered.

“Did someone say my name?” said Salt, as he entered the tent.“Salt, thank goodness you are here!” shouted Pepper in relief. “I didn’t think you were coming back.”“Of course I was coming back,” said Salt. “I only went to the general store to get some supplies.”

“Oh, Salt, I am so sorry I got mad at you. Friends should share and I was not being a good friend,” said Pepper.“No, you were right Pepper, I should have been more prepared,” said Salt.“I guess we were both right,” smiled Pepper, as he gave his friend a well deserved hug.
